Fun in Adelaide and a mystery bird

Kia ora,

Wow! Last week I ventured over to Adelaide for the Institute of Professional Editors conference. I got to meet so many of my editing friends in person for the first time!

I’m still processing all the wonderful talks I attended and conversations I had, but one of the key takeaways is just how much we all love working with words and working with writers. You’re the reason we have our jobs!

I didn’t venture too far outside of Adelaide, but I did go on a long walk through the gardens and river area. I saw bats!! They were huge! They chattered away and stank the way seals do. Amazing.

Also, can any Australians tell me what this bird is? Is it the notorious bin chicken I’ve heard so much about?

A large round white bird with a black head and long curved black beak. It has sturdy pink legs with pink and black spotted feet.

While I was away I read Coastings, by Elise Downing, too. And I finished it in record time. Such a great read about, as Elise says, putting one foot in front of the other. I’ve been trying to find a reasonably priced copy for ages, so I was pleased to pick this up in a second hand bookshop. Elise writes with an honest self awareness that I found refreshing.

Okay! Back to editing. Catch you next week.

Deborah

PS. Still catching up on the Salt Path controversy? The Real Salt Path is an episode from the Slow News Cast and features the journalist who broke the story, Chloe Hadjimatheou. It’s a great listen.

PPS. I hope all our Pacific friends are okay following the earthquake in Russia and the tsunami warnings. Stay safe and don’t go sightseeing right now, okay?

  1. Ibis, weird-looking birds, all over Sydney parks, yes bin-chickens.
