Kia ora,
I’ve lit the fire every morning this week, partly so the living room is cosy for lunch, but mostly to keep the cats warm and out of my office. Don’t tell them, but they’re not the best editorial assistants; their suggestions are rarely in keeping with the writer’s voice and I have to undo their changes.
I hinted a few weeks ago that I have a proofreading checklist coming out – thanks to the people who volunteered to test it! Based on that feedback, I’ve tweaked a few points, and it’s almost ready to launch.
I’m really excited about it. I know how much it can cost to self-publish, so I wanted to develop a resource that would help authors give their books that final boost without breaking the budget.
Proofreading is that final step in the book publishing process, and it’s more than just reading the text for typos. The Proofreading Checklist will give you a list of all the details you need to check, and it tells you how to check them.
If you have a book coming out soon (or you know someone who does), keep an eye out in your inbox. You’ll be the first to know when it’s officially out!
Stay warm (or cool if you’re in Europe. I hear you’re sweltering under a heatwave). Catch you next week.
Cheers,
Deborah
PS: Here’s one of my editorial assistants, distracted by the bunnies outside my office window.

📚 What I’m reading
I finished A Light Through the Cracks by Beth Rodden last night! This is a book that is going to sit with me for a while. My heart hasn’t been cracked open like this in a long time. I definitely recommend it.
Help me pick my next book. Beyond the Trees: A Journey Alone Across Canada’s Arctic, by Adam Shoalts.
Or Thirty Below: The Harrowing and Heroic Story of the First All-Women’s Ascent of Denali, by Cassidy Randall
Reply and let me know which one I should go with.

Hi Deborah,
I recommend the Dinali book, as you are in winter, the Arctic sounds too cold.
