Let’s grab coffee

Kia ora,

If we caught up over coffee together and you asked me how to go about writing your adventure book, here’s what I’d say:

  • Keep your why fresh in your mind. Remember why you’re writing your story and why you want to share it. What message do you want to give your readers? How do you want your story to affect them or change them or get them out there on their own adventures?
  • If you’re on your first draft, just get all the ideas out. First drafts are for dumping all your ideas and emotions and reactions into one place. Second and third drafts are for refining and revising and working that why through the story.
  • Slow down. You don’t have to write your whole book in a month, and you don’t have to rush to publish it. Slow down, pay attention to your big picture, dig into the sentences. Enjoy the process.

These are the kinds of conversations I have with my authors, along with all the comments I leave on your manuscript, too! If you’re interested talking through your project, book yourself a free thirty-minute chat with me.

I love working with enthusiastic, outdoor-loving writers like you!

Cheers,
Deborah

PS. Were you lucky enough to see the partial solar eclipse on Monday morning? From what I read, Dunedin had the best view! Lucky us. We had a great view down the harbour and got to watch a good chunk of it.

PPS: Have you voted for your favourite birds in Forest & Bird’s Bird of the Year?? One of my votes went to the kārearea.

PPPS: If you’re in NZ, have you voted in your local elections yet???

📚 What I’m reading

Thirty Below by Cassidy Randall. My reading has slowed down recently; my evenings have been taken up with hand sewing the binding on a quilt, but once that’s done, I should have my reading time back.
