Kia ora,
I’m keeping it short and to the point this week. Which of these best describes you?
I’m currently writing a travel or adventure book
I haven’t started writing, but I have ideas and want to get started
You can just copy and paste what applies to you and chuck that in a reply. No need to even say hi if you don’t want to!
And if neither apply to you, take the free-writing option and reply with what you’re up to.
Your reply will help me figure out the direction I should be taking with the Base Camp Writing blog. I know what I want to talk about, but I don’t know if that’s actually what you want to read about. So help me out by pointing me in the right direction.
Thank you!
Cheers,
Deborah
PS. Submissions on the Conservation Amendment Bill closed on Monday, and according to Forest & Bird, 75,000 people made a submission. That’s a lot of people!
📚 What I’m reading
I wrapped up The Wind at My Back by Paul Maunder. LOVED this book. Gorgeous writing, gorgeous turns of phrase, wonderfully self-aware. Definitely check this out if you want to see excellent description and metaphor in action. Also, lots of wonderful musings on what it means to be a writer (and a cyclist).
I sped through The Art of Being a Tourist at Home by Jenny Herbert. Lots of great ideas and reasons for holidaying in your own town or country. I found the references to COVID-19 oddly dated, even though lockdowns weren’t that long ago. But otherwise, a solid read and a nice example of a travel book that sits in the guide book genre rather than the memoir genre.
Next up is Silverland: A Winter Journey Beyond the Urals by a legend of the genre, Dervla Murphy.
