Kia ora,
We’ve passed the halfway mark: for us in the southern hemisphere, winter solstice happened on Sunday. Longer (but colder) days ahead! Hoorah!
I’m keeping it short this week with six adventure-related updates about books, movies, and gear.
- Have you included quotes at the start of your travel memoir? Learn why getting them correct is important, and how you can check their accuracy: How to use quotes and epigraphs.
- Looking for your next read? The Stanfords Book of the Month newsletter is great for inspiration. This month it’s The Traveller: The Revolutionary Life of George Forster and his Search for Humanity, by Andrea Wulf.
- I recently revisited Tim Mathis’ article “Hate America and feel trapped? Have you considered trying 19th century philosophy?” It’s a great, long read about community, the outdoors, and philosophy.
- The Mountain Film & Book Festival has just wrapped up its Wānaka leg. Queenstown is hosting its share of films this Thursday and Friday.
- Need more outdoors films? The Gutsy Girls Adventure tour is happening throughout New Zealand in August. And if you can’t make it to one of their movie nights or you’re outside of NZ, you can stream the 2025 line up on Adventure Reels TV.
- Been getting some winter tramping in and realised your jacket isn’t as waterproof as it once was? Earth Sea Sky has an article about getting your jacket back up to scratch.

PS: You’ve got until July 2 to make your submission on the Conservation Amendment Bill. You may have seen the Forest and Bird map that shows the two types of land at risk of being sold or being used for economic development.
Check out my newsletter from a couple of weeks ago with links to help you make your submission.
